Another successful production "Albert Nobbs" by Gordon Steel, was presented to our appreciative audiences this year. Under the capable direction of Tracey Carter, this comedy explored the themes of retirement, encroaching old age and death. Albert's retirement plans go awry when his wife Connie suddenly departs, only to return to organise his life!
A new initiative this year was the Katikati Theatre Club Nights, Held monthly Club Nights at the Junction Theatre on the second Friday of each month, Club Nights began in August. They have proved a great opportunity to meet new people and have fun with play readings, quiz nights, improvisation, etc. We welcome your suggestions for these evenings.
Katikati Theatre began in March 2010 when thirteen people attended a public meeting to consider the viability of a theatre group here in the town. Instead of residents travelling to Tauranga and Waihi, we agreed we had sufficient talent, experience and enthusiasm to start our own group.
Those who came were so keen to begin that workshops were organized; these consisted of play readings, theatre games and improvisation.
Katikati Theatre Inc is an enthusiastic drama group based in Katikati that was formed in March 2010 after thirteen local people, committed to seeing live theatre in the district, gathered together and agreed to start a local drama group.
At the time, the group had no equipment, but have since purchased comfortable seats, lights, curtains, props and an ever-increasing costume collection. In 2016 we purchased two shipping containers and these house our equipment, seats and costumes.
Well, maybe not quite, but we certainly moved around.
With no theatre of our own we mounted productions in all sorts of venues: An empty building which now houses a restaurant, (“Barry, A Day in the Life’); two productions performed in Katikati Primary School hall, (“Gallaher” and “Dr Joe’); a cafeteria, (Come into the Parlour”); historic St Peter’s church and the Omokoroa Settlers’ Hall,(‘A Christmas Carol’); the Talisman Hotel,(two seasons of Pub plays) and of course, our Dinner Theatre at the Forta Leza Restaurant.
